MITCHELL COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — A new school is coming to Mitchell County for the first time in more than 20 years.
Mitchell County Manager Allen Cook said this $47 million project has been a long time coming.
Mitchell County Middle School, boasting the mascot "The Miners," will serve as the middle school for the entire county.
Cook said this project, which officially began construction in March, has been funded entirely through grant money.
With a daughter that will attend the middle school, Cook said this is a special moment in time.
“I’m excited for her, I’m excited for all out kids 'cause they’re getting to go in an up-to-date, modernized brand-new facility," Cook said Thursday, Oct. 12.
He said that, while the county has great teachers, it's in need of updated facilities, and county leaders, teachers and students alike are excited to finally be getting them.
THe middle school is expected to be ready for students to walk through the doors by August 2025.
